I made it a point when I went on vacation to be fully engaged in every moment of it. I left my work phone at home and checked emails only once. Working in a field that requires you think of food and fitness constantly can become overwhelming at times. Especially when you leave work and still are thinking “What am I going to make for dinner” and “What am I going to do for my workout”. I would never trade my career for anything; It’s challenging, rewarding, and my passion. How lucky am I to be able to have that?
But, I went into this trip saying I would throw caution to the wind and go with the flow when it came to food and nutrition. I traded long runs by myself for walks with E and was (and still am!) completely ok with it. What I realized though, is that nutrition is just engrained in me. I try to forget it but I just like food. I like talking about it, educating the people around me, eating it etc. (luckily E tolerates it). And while my vacation eats may not have been ideal for everyone I was able to find my own balance in the choices I made. Here’s a little sample of what I ate!
Add in a few drinks as well as ice cream and I’d say it was a success!

I definitely indulge in drinks & dessert more often.

Ooh, that tortellini – looks amazing! What was your favorite restaurant while you were there?
We actually only ate out 2 times that I can remember. The food at the ballpark was very good (much more than your standard ballpark food!) and the tortellini was from a small Italian restaurant in Weston!
Weston as in Ft. Lauderdale area?! That’s where I’m going in 2 weeks to stay with a friend…what’s the name?! PS all your food looks good and when on vacation I tend to snack wayyyy more and we always have cocktails starting around 4 pm
That tortellini looks fantastic!
I notice that I definitely splurge a lot more while on vacation. But for example on the cruise, I usually only splurged with dinner. But it always depends. If you have a fridge in the room, I like to bring breakfast items sometimes.

Loving your eats – but totally craving gluten now! Glad you had a wonderful time!
You did REALLY well! I always pig out on junk food on vacation, haha!

My biggest change is that I take a long leisurely breakfast, really savor it, and it usually has more protein in it than usual.

Wow – you had an impressively healthy vacation! You go girl.
I definitely throw caution to the wind on breaks. This last Easter was proof of that. I still try to “move” (like you, I often sub in walks with fam/friends instead of runs), but I don’t get picky about the food part. It’s vacation for a reason.

WOW, so much good looking food! I love that Lara bar flavor.
I definitely try to keep it healthy, yet splurge at the same time while away. I can definitely admit that I indulge in drinks & desserts. I was in London for two weeks and if it was a night in with my best friend we had several bottles of wine or a variety of bottled beers to choose from!

Yum! I always bring oatmeal to keep in the hotel room for breakfast and snacks like bars and fruit to keep in my purse. I’d rather splurge on dinner. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being mindful of what you’re eating. I used to gorge on vacations and would feel disgusting and bloated the whole time. I feel much better if I’m a little more mindful.
